Treatment of Prisoners - International and Polish Perspecitve

During the course the participants will be provided with knowledge comcerning the following items:
1/ Nature and purpose of the imprisonment (historical remarks included) - 1 h;
2/ International movement towards the human treatment of prisoners - the past and current perspective - 1 h;
3/ Contmeporary international penitentiary standards: - 3 h
- universal (UNO)
- regional (Council of Europe, European Union)
4/ General description of the of the current situation of prisoners in Poland - 1 h;
5/ Basic dilemmas of Polish prison system - quality of prison life - 1 h;
6/ Problem of special categories of prisoners - 3 h
7/ Protection of life, health and personal security of prisoners against the background of chosen European case-law - 2 h;
9/ Basic methods of social rehabilitation of prisoners - 2 h;
10/ Life after release - 1 h.

2/ individual work (reading the recommended literature and documentation) - 65 h
3/ written essay concerning a chosen topic - 35
4/ preparation for short final disscussion based upon the essay - 35

Learning outcomes - knowledge
K_W04 - the student acquires necessary knowledge concerning the basic penitentiary dilemmas in confrontation with the human rights standards;
K_W05 - the student becomes familiar with the professional terminology and penitentiary standards both of international and Polish dimension;
K_W08 - the student has a solid knowledge concerning the evolution of international penitentiary standards and understands the rationalization concerning the current tendencies;

K_U01 - the student is able to interpret in a proper way the social and legal phenomenons concerning the interpersonal problems of "life in prison";
K_U02 - the student is able to make his/her own critical analyses as far as the particular penitentiary standards are concerned;
K_U08 - the student can consider with a solid competence different social contexts of functioning the prison system;

K_K04 - the student identifies properly the moral and ethical problems which are connected with international and national movement for the effectiveness of imprisonment and social rehabilitation of prisoners;

Prerequisites
1/ general orientation concerning the nature of imprisonment and human rights protection;
2/ the lecture is offered for the participants of the "Comparative Law Course", thus the way of presentation is very comprehensible in order to allow the students to follow properly the particular considerations
Assessment criteria
written essay based upon the chosen issue and short oral presentation concerning the analysed problem.
The quality assessment of work will take into account both the proper understanding of subject, knowledge of the standards as well as the English professional terminology skills.
