Contemporary legal and international problems in Latin America 1300-OG-CI-IL-KPP

Lectures and discussion seminars focuses on 3 main subjects:

1. First, basic information about the continent and countires

2. Second, reading and discussion about primary literature provided by the teacher

3. Third, discussion about particular problems related to Latin America. Students choose 2 or 3 subjects which will be covered during classes.

Tentative structure of classses:
1. Introduction of various states in Latin America and their legal problems – part 1 - 2 hours
2. Introduction of various states in Latin America and their legal problems – part 2 – 2 hours
3. Civil war with FARC and peace process in Colombia - 3 hours
4. Investment and corruption problems in LA - 2 hours
5. Territorial disputes among LA States - 2 hours
6. Status of underwater treasures and shipwrecks – case of Galleon San Jose discovered near Cartagena - 2 hours
7. Legal situation of Venezuelan Government and refugee crisis - 2 hours

Total student workload

Contact hours with teacher: - participation in lectures - 20 hrs - consultations - 5 hrs Self-study hours: - preparation for lectures - 25 hrs - reading literature and taking notes - 45 hrs - preparation for discussion/presentation 10 hrs - preparation for examination - 45 hrs Altogether: 150 hrs (6 ECTS)

Learning outcomes - knowledge

W1: Student possesses an advanced knowledge about legal system of various states in Latin America. W2: Student possesses a profound knowledge on the notion of corruption, investment law, territorial disputes in Latin America, legal status of underwater heritage, refugees. W3: Student knows contemporary problems and challenges of central and South America.

U1: Student is able to explain a phenomenon of legal problems of states in Latin America. in order to show its crucial impact upon contemporary legal institutions (their forming, modification and differentiation) U2: Student is able to make a use of theoretical knowledge on legal problems for purposes of practical critical analysis of contemporary real problems of various states in LA

K1: Student understands the significance of legal structure of states in Latin America and its consequences K2: Student properly identifies legal contemporary problems and knows what international rules and treaties should be applicable in order to solve them

Expository teaching methods: - informative lecture, - participatory lecture, - problem-based lecture. - discussion (brainstorming, pair and group discussion, panel discussion) - Case-study

Assessment criteria

Assessment methods: W1, W2, W3, U1, U2, K1, K2

Written examination: single choice test including 20 questions. No negative points for incorrect answers. Student's active participation during the classes/discussion is a subsidiary mean of assessment and allows to raise the sum of points. Students are obliged to prepare for classes (reading materials) and also prepare presentation about chosen subject.

Assessment criteria

Thresholds of marks:
very good: 17-20 pts. (85 – 100 %)
good plus: 15-16 pts. (75-85 %)
good: 12-14 pts. (60-75 %)
satisfactionary plus: 10-11 pts (50-60 %)
satisfactionary: 8- 9 pts. (40-50 %)
fail: 0-7 (0 – 40 %)
