(in Polish) Kultura i tradycje I Rzeczypospolitej 1202-H-KTIR-S1

The course addresses the traditions of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth as a multinational and multi-religious community, founded on the division of power, self-government, decentralization, and limitations on authority in relation to citizens and the territories constituting the state. This image will be confronted both with early critiques of anarchy, Sarmatian culture, and conservatism, and with contemporary approaches: pop-cultural representations, journalistic narratives of “people’s history,” as well as references to or rejections of this tradition by states and communities operating within the territory of the former Commonwealth (Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine, Belarus, Latvia).

Key concepts will therefore include Sarmatism and Sarmatian culture, their varying interpretations and uses in public discourse, the phenomenon of the remarkable popularity of the series *1670*, the popularity of YouTubers and online content creators engaging with this subject matter, and diverse, innovative methods of presenting this period employed by museums, historical reenactment movements, and cultural institutions. On the one hand, the course examines popular cultural and ideological images of this past in the contemporary era; on the other, it focuses on knowledge of available sources, methods of inquiry, and ways of using and popularizing these elements.

Emphasis will be placed on the cultural dimension of these phenomena, both in terms of imaginaries and continuities, and in terms of documenting, researching, and disseminating knowledge about this period. The culmination of students’ work will be the preparation and presentation of an original source-based material.

W1 has knowledge of selected topics in world history—covering the five main historical periods—presented in both chronological and thematic perspectives (K_W04). W2 has an elementary understanding of the relationships and interdependencies between the past and current events, and of how these shape the awareness and identity of individuals and societies (K_W06).

Learning outcomes - skills

U1 presents the outcomes of individual or team-based work in a clear and well-structured form, using a range of modern methods and techniques appropriate to the relevant field of history; is able to prepare oral presentations and written assignments in Polish, with correct use of diverse forms of historical writing (K_U07).

Learning outcomes - social competencies

K1 is able to appropriately identify and set priorities necessary for the accomplishment of tasks defined by oneself or by others (K_K03). K2 recognizes and respects differences in viewpoints resulting from diverse cultural backgrounds; demonstrates independence and autonomy of thought while respecting the right of others to display the same qualities; is capable of showing such attitudes in practice (K_K04). K3 understands the necessity of adhering to ethical standards in the work of a historian and in the popularization of historical knowledge (K_K06). K4 undertakes attempts to participate in historical discussions and to communicate historical information to audiences interested in history outside the circle of specialists (K_K09).

Assessment criteria

Writing a review or essay, or preparing and commenting on a primary source text (6–8 pages) on an agreed topic, based on a selected scholarly work.
