Lecture:
The lecture's content is devoted to plants used in the production of cosmetic preparations. The course presents plant species used in creating cosmetics, considering the botanical characteristics, origin, occurrence, content of active substances, and methods of obtaining. It characterizes the chemical compounds responsible for plant materials' cosmetic properties and effects of plant materials, including alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, terpenes, mucilages, and pectins. It presents the properties and research methods of selected phytocosmetics. The lecture discusses the ways of processing plant materials to obtain cosmetic raw materials.
The scope of the lectures also includes the assessment of the impact of active plant ingredients on the physiology of the skin, including phytocosmetics for the care of various types of skin (e.g., oily, dry, acne, vascular, mature), skin with pathological changes (acne) and natural cosmetics used for skincare, hair and in case of problems with the scalp (dandruff, seborrhea, alopecia).
The subject includes the possible adverse effects of preparations based on natural raw materials of plant origin.
Tutorials:
Students learn to evaluate the safety of cosmetics. Using the example of phytocosmetics recipes, they learn to calculate exposure to a cosmetic, exposure to cosmetic ingredients, and calculate the safety margin of cosmetics. These calculations are an important part of any cosmetic safety report. In addition, they learn the technique of smell science on the example of plant essential oils. They also solve recruitment tasks from various cosmetic companies in order to prepare for finding a job in the industry.
