Processing and Recycling of Packaging Materials

The lecture will focus on the following topics:
- discussion of the types of packaging,
- characterizing the functions of packaging
- packaging modifications
- packaging production methods: injection and thermoforming
- basics of recycling of packaging materials
- machines and tools used in the processing of plastics
Laboratory:
- analysis of the types of seals used in the packaging,
- analysis and comparison of the colors of packaging materials
- determination of the degree of thermal shrinkage of the foil in accordance with the applicable standards
-change of the surface energy of packaging films
- bag strength assessment with free fall
- carrying out vacuum packaging and changing the properties of the product
- assessment of the barrier properties of packaging materials
- preparation of the final presentation
Total student workload
Hours with the participation of teachers:
lecture: 15 hours; laboratory: 45 hours; consultation: 15 hours .

After completing the above course, students will have the following knowledge:

W10. The student has a general knowledge of the differences between stretch foil and K_W13, K_W15 heat-shrinkable foil
W11 The student knows and understands the methods of thermoforming packaging - K_W13, K_W15

U2. The student is able to calculate the color difference in selected samples of polymers K-_U09, K_U05
U3. The student is able to determine the changes in dimensions of a polymer film or sheet after heating K_U09, K_U13
U4. The student is able to perform the various stages of mechanical recycling K_U09
U5. The student is able to form packages of various dimensions using the thermoforming method K_U09, K_U13
U6. The student is able to determine the Vicat softening point of polymers K_U09
U7 The student is able to carry out vacuum packing and assess the influence of the material on storage in vacuum conditions K_U09, K_U13
U8. The student is able to calculate the sealing strength of the packaging K_U09, K_U13

U10. The student is able to assess the strength of the bags during free fall K_U09, K_U13
