Bioinorganic Chemistry 0600-S1-CM-CBioN
This interdisciplinary lecture discusses: - the action of elements important for life, - the function in a living organism of organic molecules (so-called life molecules) interacting as bioligands with metal ions (biometals), especially from the point of view of coordination chemistry, - the use of coordination compounds in medicine. T
Topics covered:
1. Bioelements and toxic metals.
2. Metals in biological processes.
3. Relations between the chemical properties of a metal ion and its biological function.
4. The role of organic molecules (so-called life molecules) in a living organism interacting as bioligands with metal ions (biometals).
5. Metalloenzymes and metal ion-activated enzymes.
6. Oxygen transporters and oxygen-transporting proteins.
7. Properties of reactive oxygen species and their biological effects.
8. Metals in medicine; Inorganic chemotherapeutics as an introduction to drug chemistry.
Laboratory
During laboratory classes, students perform three exercises:
1. Application of IR spectroscopy for determining cytotoxic structures
complexes of metals in the solid state.
2. Lipophilicity test of coordination compounds selected
using UV-VIS spectroscopy.
3. Study of the reactivity of coordination compounds to glutathione.
